Marina Abdo Alcantara
About the Artist
Marina Abdo Alcantara is an interdisciplinary conceptual artist who works across a variety of mediums including (but never limited to) sculpture, installation, video, performance and writing. Her work draws from her experiences growing up between Brasil, Colombia, Argentina, and now the United States, where she is currently based.
Her work with assemblage and found objects is a reflection of her worldview. Here artist and artwork work in tandem, and this constant observation of the world around her has led her to find art in seemingly mundane places. By finding tensions and harmonies between existing things, the artist lends her hand to carefully unify elements in the plane of art. This form of personal storytelling is an integral part of her life, and art making has accompanied her for as long as she can remember.
Her work is deeply personal in the stories that she tells through her pieces, but more than that, the work is a meditation on the interconnected nature of our experiences, and her focus when producing is to draw from the emotional essence of her subject matter. Despite every work coming from a tender and specific spot in her own life, she finds visual metaphors and material relationships in her work to convey the rawest forms of emotion, something that no one is a stranger to.
Marina’s artistic practice is a result of an internal struggle that she feels connects all people, and through her work she tries to transform intense and overwhelming feelings into physical objects that both hold memory, but also forge new meaning around our experiences. Play, experimentation and childhood wonder drive her work and inform the kinds of objects that call to her. Heavy subject matter is carried by a childlike vulnerability in her never ending artistic journey. Her goal is to express, connect, and feel deeply, and she invites her audience to do the same alongside her.
